Zacarias Kamwenho

Zacarias Kamwenho ( born September 5, 1934 in Chimbundo, Huambo, Angola ) is an Angolan Archbishop and peace activist.

Life

Zacarias Kamwenho, the comes from the people of the Ovimbundu and visited in Huambo Missionasschulen and Seminary, was ordained by Américo Henriques bishop in 1974 and was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Luanda and Titular Bishop of Tabla. In 1975 he became bishop of Ngunza and Novo Redondo and 1997 Archbishop of Lubango. In 2001, he acted as an intermediary in the Angolan Civil War and held the chair of the Bishops ' Conference of Angola and São Tomé ( CEAST ) and the Ecumenical Committee for Peace in Angola ( COIEPA ), which was founded in April 2000. It brings the Catholic CEAST, the Angolan Evangelical Alliance (AEA ) and the Council of Christian Churches in Angola ( CICA) together. He joined in 2009 as Archbishop of Lubango in retirement, but since November 2010 Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Namibe.

He is co -winner of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought awarded by the European Parliament in 2001.
