Zaculeu

History

The detection of different phases proves that Zaculeu was inhabited ( from AD 250-300 ) since the early classical period. In the Postclassic the place rose to a commercial center, the connections to Mexico had what Mexican influences in the architecture and the Mexican Fund luxury goods point. Around 1250 was Zaculeu capital of the Mam Maya, who controlled the town until the sixteenth century.

In 1525 the Spaniard Pedro de Alvarado conquered the city and expelled its inhabitants, whose descendants still live in large part in and around Huehuetenango.
