Zaleucus

Zaleukos of Locri ( according to Diodorus son of a nobleman ) was in the 7th century BC, a well-known legislator in under Italian Locri.

Supposedly he had traveled as a pupil of Pythagoras with this Egypt.

Zaleukos is considered the first Greek to fixed laws in writing. He did so in view of Lycurgus tradition. Zaleukos intended to counteract with the determination of the penalty and the exclusion of ransoming of the law, corruption and social antagonisms.

Because of his reputation in legal matters Zaleukos the respected status of Aisymneten was awarded, which was out of court invoked as mediating arbitrator.

Aftereffect

The Renaissance saw Zaleukos as a just and exemplary ruler. He was, for example, immortalized in the painting facade of the town hall of the city of Liestal ( 1590).
