Hans-Joachim Gehrke

Hans -Joachim Gehrke ( born October 28, 1945 in Salzgitter Lebenstedt ) is a German historian. He was 2008-2011 president of the German Archaeological Institute.

Life

Hans -Joachim Gehrke, one of the most prominent German historian was, from 1961 to 1965 students at Ratsgymnasium Goslar, placed there in 1965 Abitur, he studied from 1967 to 1973 history and classical philology at the University of Göttingen, where he received his doctorate in 1973 ( thesis supervisor was Alfred Heuss ), from 1973 to 1982 was a research assistant in 1982 and habilitated. From 1982 to 1984, Gehrke was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Würzburg, 1984-1987 Full Professor at the Free University of Berlin. From 1987 to 2008 Gehrke was Professor of Ancient History at the University of Freiburg. On 11 July 2007 Hans -Joachim Gehrke was elected president of the German Archaeological Institute; he followed in this function according to the March 1, 2008 Hermann Parzinger. In the same year he was awarded an honorary professorship for the subjects of ancient history and classical philology at the Free University of Berlin. His successor is since April 1, 2011 Friederike Fless. Gehrke is currently (2012 ) Director of External Relations at University College Freiburg (UCF ).

Hans -Joachim Gehrke is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Erfurt -profit, member of the Central Directorate of the DAI and a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. Since 2010 he is also a member of the Leopoldina. From 1999 to 2005 he was a member of the Senate, the Board of Trustees and the Committee of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Gehrke is also active with the Gerda Henkel Foundation, originally as a member and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation since 2005 as a board member. 2010 Gehrke was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

Gehrke's research focuses on the history of ancient Greece, the Historical Geography of the central and eastern Mediterranean Basin, the social conflicts and social inclusion, intercultural relations, and historical ideas and collective identities.

One of his students is Eckhard Wirbelauer.
