Alexander Demandt

Alexander Demandt ( born June 6, 1937 in Marburg ) is a German historian.

The son of the Hessian historian and archivist Karl Ernst Demandt studied history and Latin philology in Tübingen, Munich and Marburg. His academic teachers were Joseph Vogt, Karl Friedrich Stroheker, Wolfgang Schadewaldt, Fritz Taeger, Karl Christian and Christian Habicht. 1964 Alexander Demandt earned his doctorate under hawk with a dissertation on current affairs and historical picture in Ammianus Marcellinus. As assistant at the Johann -Wolfgang- Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, he received 1964/65 the travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute. In 1966 he became an assistant at the University of Konstanz, 1970, he was there his habilitation with a thesis on Magister militum.

Demandt was 1974-2005 Professor of Ancient History at the Friedrich -Meinecke -Institut of the Freie Universität Berlin. The focus of his work was in the areas of the Roman world and in Late Antiquity, he also deals with the phenomenon of decline in the history, culture, vandalism, theory of history, philosophy of history and history of science. Published in 1992 Demandt together with his wife Barbara transcripts of lectures by historian Theodor Mommsen on the Roman Empire, which he had found in a Nuremberg bookseller. His last lecture in office, he held on 14 July 2005. Demandt In 2003 was awarded the Prize Ausonius, 2008 he received the Culture Prize of the Wetterau district. He is a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 1990, Corresponding Member of the German Archaeological Institute and since 2000 Correspondent. Since 2007, Alexander Demandt had several television appearances as an expert in the directed by Guido Knopp and moderated television documentary series ZDF History.

He is the father of the art historian Philip Demandt.
