Zanzibari general election, January 1961

The election of the Legislative Council in Zanzibar in January 1961 was the second choice for the Legislative Council of the Sultanate of Zanzibar.

The result looked like that the Afro - Shirazi Party (ASP ) won ten seats, the Zanzibar Nationalist Party ( ZNP ) nine, and the Zanzibar and Pemba People's Party ( ZPPP ) three. As both the ASP and the ZNP tried to form a government, occurred in two ZPPP members of the ZNP and one of the ASP. Because of the resulting stalemate elections were held in June.

Of the 95,000 registered voters is 85,000 participating in the election.
