Afro-Shirazi Party

The Afro - Shirazi Party (ASP), was a party in Zanzibar.

Development

These were to a unification of the Persian Shiraz Party and the African Afro Party. One of its founders was Abeid Amani Karume. The party led in 1964 to the coup against the Sultan and crashed it.

After the unification of Zanzibar with Tanganyika to the state of Tanzania, the ASP with the Tanganyika African National Union united ( TANU ), which was in 1965 declared the Unity Party on the mainland, to Chama Cha Mapinduzi new party. This was the only legal party in Tanzania, which was the parent of the Parliament and the Government under the Constitution. Chairman of the Unity Party was the president Julius Nyerere.
