Zaranj ( Pashto / Dari: زرنج ), (English: Zaranj ) is the capital of the Afghan province Nimrus. It lies on the border with Iran, had 6959 inhabitants in 2010 and is already calculated in 2012 with 10,381. The city is a major trading center.

The Zaranj Airport is located on the northeastern edge of town.

History

The historic Zaranj was the capital of the Saffarids and lay on the Silk Road. A wide road led to Herat and Kandahar.
