Zay ( ዛይኘ [za: jɲɲǝ ] or የዛይ አፍ [ jǝza: j af] ) is the language of Zay, an ethnic group that lives on the shores and islands of the Zway Lake in south-central Ethiopia.
Classification
The Zay is one of the äthiosemitischen languages , a sub-group of the Semitic languages. The Äthiosemitische divided into the two groups of North and Südäthiosemitisch. The Zay is attributed to the Ostgurage languages that form a subgroup of the transversals Südäthiosemitischen. When the closest related languages are the Harari, the Silt'e and Wolane.
