The Central Library of the University of Technology and University of the Arts Berlin (also Volkswagen University Library and University Library called the Volkswagen -House) is the joint University Library of the Technical University of Berlin (TU ) and the University of the Arts ( University of Arts ). The library is located at Pheasant in Berlin- Charlottenburg. The Director of the University Library of the Arts is Andrea Zeyns, director of the UB TU is Wolfgang Zick.

History

The entire book old stock, with special collections, which was founded in 1799 Bauakademie ( predecessor of the Institute of Technology ) and the Architects and Engineers Association in Berlin, as well as the archives of the Royal Institute of Technology Charlottenburg is lost shortly after the end of World War II and.

The rescued thus historical book and plan resources ( among other valuable collections of horticultural library, Library Joseph Becker- Dillingen, Camillo Schneider, Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Berlin ) of the UB account for only a small part. Because the catalog remained almost intact, parts of the existing building could be procured replacement.

Besides this there existed at the Technical University until 2004 approximately 17 departmental libraries, which were close with her free hand stands in its institutions, departments or faculties. As part of the restructuring by the new library building five technology - or science- and three humanities or social science department libraries were transferred to the Central Library of the University.

The history of the library of the University of the Arts can be traced back to the founding of the Academy of Arts in 1696.

On 18 October 2004, the new building of the common university library, the university library was Volkswagen, opened for use. Together with the library of the University of the Arts in the fourth floor uses the TU the first to third floor.

With the move to the new building went hand in hand as a centralization of both the TU Library Stocks ( department libraries, academic libraries at faculty level, institute libraries and departmental libraries ) as well as the library holdings of the University of the Arts.

The approximately 56.3 million euro expensive, four-story building is the result of decades of start-up, execution of which threatened several times to fail because of the costs. According to the general rules of the Higher Education Institutions Act, the federal government and the State of Berlin should first ever bear the cost in half. After the country in 1999 its funding commitment withdrew, offered to the University to take over this portion of a loan itself. This added to the cost of additional 15.8 million euros in interest, which are also to be borne by the TU. An existing in the last stages of planning funding gap in the amount of 5.1 million euros were closed by funds from the Volkswagen AG. Together with the cost of the relocation of the existing library locations of just under 1.5 million euros to 39.4 million euros muster the two universities. These funds will provide mainly by the abandonment of previously leased building TU.

Difficulties in the procurement process delayed the start of construction again. As general contractor, began the company commissioned Epple, Stuttgart, in the summer of 2002 with the establishment. The opening ceremony took place on 9 December 2004.

Building and use

The original " playful " and award-winning design by architect couple Jeromin of 1988 was heavily revised over long planning by the architect Walter A. Noebel or "optimized". As critics, the building acted more frequently in comparison to a " parking garage for books " a. The library is oriented in their design and their technical equipment appropriate to the storage of books in the magazine and a partially open shelves of the stock. An ordered from the magazine medium is to be available to 3 ½ hours to about 1 ½. Noteworthy is the high number of computer workstations with Internet access, the spatial effect, as well as the lack of a reading room.

The use of the library and all the services available to all students, academic staff, alumni, as well as all interested parties, the latter for an annual fee of 20 euros, available. This includes the use and circulation of most of the existing media library. An exception is the audio-visual media of the Arts, the only active members of University of the Arts (alumni not ) can be borrowed - any other person is only a reference to use. To borrow books from a library card is required. Media from the magazine can be ordered with no user card over the reading room.
