Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung

The Centre for European Economic Research ( ZEW) in Mannheim is an economic research institute of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz ( WGL). It is under the administration of President Clemens Fuest and sales director Thomas Kohl. The ZEW is one of Europe's leading economic research institutes. Currently it employs around 180 staff.

History

The establishment of the ZEW in 1990, the scientific work began in 1991. Founding director was Heinz König. In 2005, the Research Institute became a member of the Leibniz Association. From 1997 to 2013 Wolfgang Franz was president of the ZEW. He was succeeded by Clemens Fuest.

Outline and objectives

Organizationally, the ZEW research is divided into nine units:

The ZEW followed in these sectors four objectives:

  • Research
  • Economic policy advice
  • Promotion of young scientists
  • Opinion formation in professional science and the public

The overarching Forschungsleitgedanke at the ZEW is the economic analysis of functioning markets and institutions in Europe. The competence of the ZEW is in particular in the field of applied microeconometrics and computable general equilibrium models. The scientists at the ZEW communicate their research results at scientific conferences on the one hand and in professional journals. Secondly, they give but this also studies publication series and continuing education courses to the general public.

Particular attention will be the monthly published by the ZEW " ZEW economic expectations." They are an important leading indicator of economic development in Germany. But also queried the expectations for the Euro Zone, Japan, the UK and the USA.

Financing

The financing of the ZEW is largely provided by the State of Baden -Württemberg and since 2005 from the Federal-State funding; these institutional funding was in 2010 53 % of expenditure. External funding accounted for 41%, of which 45% came from federal, state and foreign ministries, 25 % of companies and associations, 17 % of the European Commission, 10 % of the German Research Foundation as well as 3 % of foundations.
