Zhao Fei

Zhao Fei (Chinese赵 非, Pinyin Zhao Fei; MAY 1961 in Xi'an, Shaanxi ) is a Chinese cinematographer.

Life

Zhao Fei is the son of an architect and grew up during the Cultural Revolution. From 1978, he studied engineering at the camera Beijing Film Academy and graduated in 1982. He counts together with filmmakers like Chen Kaige, Zhang Yimou and Tian Zhuangzhuang to the Fifth Generation of Chinese film. From the mid- 1980s, he first worked as the main cinematographer for feature films. Internationally, he was known above all for his work with the U.S. auteur Woody Allen, for he turned off Sweet and Lowdown, Small Time Crooks, and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion. For his work on the Red Lantern Zhao was awarded in 1993 for Best Cinematographer with a National Society of Film Critics Award.
