Zhao Jiping

Zhao Jiping (Chinese赵季平/赵季平, Zhao Jiping Pinyin, born August 1945 in Shulu, Hebei Province, China) is a Chinese composer. He became known for his collaboration with the directors of the so-called Fifth Generation of Chinese cinema, led by Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige. Zhao has the music for some of the most famous films of the two written, including Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, Farewell My Concubine and Yellow Earth.

Zhao grew up in Xi'an, where he studied at the Academy of Music Composition. He graduated in 1970. Since then he has worked as a composer. The breakthrough came for him than Chen invited him in 1983 to write the music for the film Yellow Earth. In addition to film scores, Zhao has also orchestral works and operas composed.
