Zimoun

Zimoun ( * 1977 in Bern, Switzerland ) is a Swiss artist based in Bern. His works are the fields of fine art, especially installation and sound art to you,. As building blocks for his works Zimoun used mostly from the everyday or industrial areas derived elements and materials, such as fans, cardboard, motors, compressed air, cable, plastic bags or welding wire.

Life and work

As an autodidact employed Zimoun since his early childhood with visual and acoustic activities such as music, composition, photography or painting. Already at an early age he began to deal with minimalist, reductive procedures, principles and methods, and to be interested in minimalism, as well as related and freshly minted art forms. In an interview on Swiss Radio DRS 2 ( " Zimoun - Architect for noise and sound " by Thomas Adank, Music of Our Time, 2011) Zimoun he mentioned the American composer and artist John Cage as one of those artists with whose work and thought during his youth dealt most pronounced. In 2000, he received an Honorary Mention at the Swiss Youth Photography Award. There followed the first exhibitions, including in the photo forum Pasquart Biel / Bienne and the Kunsthalle Bern, and various other awards and prizes, including the Aeschlimann- Corti Scholarship ( Award 2005 prize in 2009 ), the Kiefer Hablitzel prices at the Swiss Art Awards (2006), the New York grant from the Office of Culture of the canton of Bern (2007), the Sitemapping / Media Projects Award of the Federal Office of Culture (FOC ) 2008 or an Honorary Mention at the Prix Ars Electronica (2010).

Together with the graphic designer Marc Beekhuis founded Zimoun 2003, the label space [ ] as a platform and network for artists, architects, musicians and designers, which deal with reductive principles. Since 2003, published void [ ] under the direction of Zimoun more than 60 CDs, DVDs and objects by international artists.

Since 2002 Zimouns work has been shown in numerous international solo and group exhibitions, including at Art Basel; Nam June Paik Art Center in Korea; Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts, Taipei; Ringling Museum of Art, Florida, Kunsthalle Bern; Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein; Contemporary Art Museum MNAC Bucharest; Museu da Imagem e do Som, São Paulo; Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt.

Performances and workshops led him inter alia to Transmediale, Berlin; Elektra Festival, Montreal; Sonic Acts Festival, Amsterdam; ISEA Singapore; Nuit Blanche, New York; State Gallery of Stuttgart; Dissonanze Festival, Roma; Brown University, Providence; Academy of Fine Arts, Krakow; School of the Art Institute, Chicago; ZHdK Zurich University of the Arts, Zurich.

Zimoun is represented by bitforms gallery in New York and the Galerie Denise René. He runs his studio in the Bernese center PROGR.
