Zoarcoidei

Rathbunella hypoplecta

The Aalmutterverwandten ( Zoarcales ) or Gebärfischähnlichen form a partial order of subordination Cottioidei within the order of Perciformes ( Perciformes ). In older classifications were performed under the name Aalmutterartige or Zoarcoidei as a separate suborder of Perciformes. There are usually elongated fish that live in the northern, cold seas. Most species occur in the North Pacific.

System

The monophyly of the Aalmutterverwandten and most of them belonging to families is uncertain. There are few characteristics shared by all Aalmutterverwandten together.

The Japanese ichthyologists H. Imamura and M. Yabe give a total of three synapomorphies for Zoarcales:

They share further twelve synapomorphies with the closely related relatives Gropp ( Cottales ). The Aalmutterverwandten nine families are expected, of which the Bathymasteridae are the most original, 95 genera and 340 species.
