Zorkul

The Zorkulsee ( Sir -i - kol ) is located in Central Asia in southern Pamirs on the border with Afghanistan.

Geography

The 38.9 km ² large lake, which spreads out in 4130 m altitude on the border of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, extends east -west direction at about 20 km in length. In this direction, the border between the two countries runs through the lake to kinking in its extreme eastern part of south, so that its southern Afghanistan and its northern part belongs to Tajikistan.

The Zorkulsee, which is located in a vast, treeless and sparsely vegetated high mountain valley is surrounded by high mountains, including the Concord Peak ( 5469 m), the summit of which is located about 15 km south of the lake.

The lake, in which there are several islands, is fed by numerous small streams and drained by the current flowing to the west Pamir. The first European to visit the lake proved, was the British naval officer John Wood in 1838, who named the lake after the British Queen Victoria.
