Zülfü Livaneli

Ömer Zülfü Livaneli ( born June 20, 1946 in Ilgın ) is a Turkish composer, singer, writer and film director.

Life

In the 70 years Livaneli was forced to leave Turkey, as he was suspended due to his political views repression and was imprisoned. He lived first in Stockholm and later in Paris and Athens. In 1984 he returned to Turkey, where he gave his famous concert with the song Merhaba ( Welcome ) in İstanbul, and was celebrated by many people.

Livaneli has received many national and international awards in his life. His songs have been interpreted by artists such as Joan Baez, Maria Farantouri and Jocelyn B. Smith and translated into many languages. Concerts have taken him to numerous countries, including Germany. As an important person of culture, art and politics Livaneli has written nearly 300 songs and 30 film scores. He composed the music for five plays and a ballet and wrote nine books. Particularly well known were his poems by Hikmet Nâzım.

A long-standing collaboration and friendship Livaneli connects with the Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. With him he founded in 1986, the Committee for Turkish-Greek friendship, to promote mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence of the Greek and the Turkish people. Together with Mikis Theodorakis and Maria Farandouri he gave many concerts with Turkish and Greek songs again and again signals for a peaceful coexistence. Often he was also compared with Theodorakis and referred to as " the Turkish Theodorakis ".

Livaneli resulted in three films directed and 1989 he received the Golden Palm of the Valencia Festival of Mediterranean Cinema and during the Montpellier Film Festival, the Golden Antigone. The film Sis (fog) was nominated for Best European Film. His films have been shown in Turkey, the USA, France, Germany, Switzerland and Japan and broadcast by television stations such as the BBC, WDR and Spanish, Canadian and Japanese broadcasters.

In October 1986, Livaneli along with Federico Mayor, Yaşar Kemal, Arthur Miller and other famous artists and thinkers accepted an invitation from Tschynggys Aitmatov for the first Issyk -Kul Forum, which took place in Kyrgyzstan. Later were held in Wengen, Granada and in Mexico City.

In 1995 he was appointed personal adviser to UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor and 1996 UNESCO ambassador. He was for the Republican People's Party (CHP) elected as a member of the Grand National Assembly ( Parliament ) of Turkey in 2002, where he remained until 2007.
