Zum Nußbaum

The Gasthaus Zum Nussbaum is a traditional tavern in the historic center of Berlin. The name owed ​​its original restaurant a walnut, standing in front of the building.

History

The walnut was originally in Fischerstraße 21 in Coelln and was destroyed in 1943 during an allied bombing raid. The now rare late medieval gabled house was from the mid-16th century, above the basement entrance was the year " 1507 " attached.

The restaurant is best known for prominent visitors such as the environment artist and photographer Heinrich Zille.

Current situation

As part of the reconstruction of the old Berlin Nikolai district in the years 1985 to 1987 on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Berlin, a copy of the traditional restaurant in the Probststraße 7 was from the planning architect Günter Stahn built on Nikolaikirchplatz and again planted a walnut.

At the site of the present Walnut stood until 1945, the provost of St. Nicholas Church.

The pub is now next to the restaurants to the last instance and to rib as one of the last remaining old Berlin venues in the city center.
