Zurab Tchiaberashvili

Zurab Tschiaberaschwili (Georgian ზურაბ ჭიაბერაშვილი; born June 6 1972) is a Georgian politician (independent). The political scientist was from April 2004 to July 2005 Mayor of the Georgian capital Tbilisi. Since 2005, he is Georgian ambassador to the Euro Europe.

Life

He earned his doctorate at the Tbilisi State University and completed his postgraduate studies at the New School in New York City. Initially he worked at the governmental Freedom Institute in Tbilisi, which seeks to ensure compliance with political and personal freedoms in Georgia. He was a critic of then President Eduard Shevardnadze, a name which he denied the ability to solve Georgia's internal problems.

He was Managing Director of the International Society for Fair Elections independent and Democracy ( ISFED ), the organization that provided evidence by a parallel counting that the Georgian parliamentary elections of November 2003 were forged in 2002. After the Rose Revolution, the Parliament elected him on 30 November 2003 proposal of interim President Nino Burjanadze with 106 votes to one as Chairman of the Central Election Commission. According to the OECD, he organized a clean flow of the Georgian presidential elections in January and the Georgian parliamentary elections in March 2004.

On 19 April 2004 Tschiaberaschwili was appointed by President Mikheil Saakashvili to the Mayor of Tbilisi. He gained great reputation by publicly his fight against corruption in the administration and illegal buildings in the capital. One of his main goals was to reduce government bureaucracy and reduce the number of employees in the municipality. He was with the opposition popular, but came into conflict with parliamentarians of the President's party National Movement - Democrats. Saakashvili succeeded him on 12 July 2005 from his office. Parliament elected him to the Georgian ambassador to the Euro Europe.
