Zürich Wipkingen railway station

Opened on October 2, 1932 Zurich Wipkingen station is located on one of the oldest railway lines of Switzerland, in 1856 by the Swiss Northeastern Railway (NOB ) opened railway line Zurich - Oerlikon. The double track route ranks since 1902 the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB ), the train station - train technically a stop - is now one of thirteen SBB stations in the city of Zurich.

Location and route

The station consists only of a covered platform between the two tracks. Accessible is this two underpasses. In addition to an underpass is the old station building, which forms an ensemble with the neighboring restaurant north bridge.

The earlier a relatively steep embankment in position today Röntgenstrasse and later on the less steep Aussersihler viaduct from Zurich main station next line divided the subsequent quarters Zurich Wipkingen front of the station until the Limmat river bridge and a dam located adjoining the bridge. After the station, it awarded the town by an ever- deepening path to Wipkingertunnel towards Zurich Oerlikon railway station. North of the station presented the North bridge the connection across the tracks between the coming of Hoengg North Street and the coming of Unterstrass Rotbuchstrasse ago. Since a huge part of the corridor north of the station in the second half of the 20th century covered, overbuilt and Wipkingertunnel was extended to the North Bridge, the latter serving as the southern portal of the tunnel.

Subsequent construction

In third opening was no need for a construction of a railway station in Wipkingen because the former municipality of the exploration and the construction of a building could not afford. In addition, there was the risk that passengers and drivers would nip it in the same following the tunnel as anfahrende trains produce a lot of smoke.

Only with the electrification and long after the incorporation Wipkingens received the roost in 1932 a railway station by Emil Schlaginhaufen in the neoclassical style.

Use today

The station building was empty at the SBB times long time, but houses since the late 1990s, again a ticket office. This is operated by a carrier independent from the SBB travel agent.

Despite the fact that the run-down ensemble is still alive, the Administrative Court of the Canton of Zurich, the buildings were not protected objects of local significance decided. A demolition was imminent and a high-rise building to be built in place of the station building and the adjacent restaurants north bridge. Since the restaurant was sold in the meantime is the high-rise not up for discussion.

Since the introduction of the S -Bahn Zurich in May 1990, the Zurich Wipkingen station is serviced exclusively by S-Bahn trains.
