Zwarte Water in Hasselt

The Zwarte Water is a 20 km long river in the Dutch province of Overijssel. The origin lies in Zwolle, where it arises from the Soest Wetering and the Nieuwe Wetering. The Zwarte Water flows into the Zwarte sea. Weteringe ( German bettors ) are drainage channels for land reclamation.

River course

The most significant "creek " is the 182 km long river Vecht, which is called in the Netherlands ( Overijssel ) Vecht. To the north of Zwolle opens the Overijsselse Vecht in the Zwarte Water. This flows past Hasselt, Zwartsluis and Genemuiden and opens into the Zwarte sea. The channel in Zwolle, the Zwarte Water combines with the present IJssel, the IJssel - Zwolle channel.

Ecology

In the rivers of the Zwarte Water chess (Fritillaria meleagris ) occurs most frequently in the Netherlands.

History

The word " zwart " in the name Zwarte Water probably has nothing to do with the color zwart = " black " to do, but rather with " Zwet " what " limit" means, in the form " Zwette ". In ancient documents of the river also Ons Water is called or " the water that flows to the sea " ( dat gaat naar het water de zee ).

The Zwarte Water was responsible for the development of the Hanseatic city of Zwolle is of great importance as it had thus a connection to the sea and so to the other Hanseatic cities.
