Zweibrücken Air Base

On the grounds of Zweibrücken Air Base is now home to civilian use Zweibrücken Airport.

The Air Base Zweibrücken was first used by the Royal Canadian Air Force ( RCAF ) and then passed to the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE ) 1969.

The construction of the air base was initiated by French military engineers and German construction in 1950 on a section of the former West Wall. The ruined remains of some bunkers of the old fortifications are still visible today.

By the end of 1952, the construction activities were completed. The base by the USAF was financed but assumed from 6 January 1953, the control of the RCAF.

Stationed units

In Zweibrücken, the 26th TRW and the 38th TRS was stationed. Both pure reconnaissance units - no combat units. In addition to flying personnel some other associations were still stationed in Zweibrücken.

Accidents and crashes

Collision of two F-15

On 6 January 1986 came via two bridges two machines of the type F-15 together, a pilot died, a plane crashed into a garden in Rimschweiler and killed a pensioner, the other machine went down in a forest near Bottenbach. Five other people were injured.

Crash of a F4 Phantom near Zweibrücken

On November 6, 1985, RF -4C Phantom crashed with the number from 69-0364 ZR 20 km north- east of Two Bridges. Both occupants were able to escape with the ejection seat.

F4 shot down in Italy from Zweibrücken

On 22 September 1987, the RF -4C Phantom was shot down by mistake with the number 69-0381 ZR. The RF -4C was launched from their option of Aviano Air Base in Italy. You should fly during an exercise, the USS Saratoga. The machine was accidentally from an F -14A ( number 162 707 ) shot down. Both occupants were able to escape with the ejection seat.

Crash of a F4 from Zweibrücken near Kaiserslautern

On 18 February 1988 an RF -4C Phantom crashed with the number from 68-0563 ZR near Kaiserslautern. The crew (CD Finney and SN Kohler) managed to escape by ejection seat.

On 15 May 1990, the RF -4C Phantom crashed with the number from 72-0151 ZR.
