Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 28-33 millimeters and have a completely black colored body. The wings of the males are more blue-black, the colored females more greenish- black. On the wings, there are five red to orange- red spots, which are also visible on the wing undersides. Often they flow together, thereby, the first and second and third and fourth normally associated, or at least very closely adjacent to one another. The wing tips of both pairs of wings are more rounded than that of similar trefoil - Widderchens ( Zygaena lonicerae ). The forewings are shorter and less pointed. The hind wings and their hem are in relation to Z. lonicerae wider. The sensor, however, are shorter and have a stronger but shorter tapered leg.

The caterpillars are like moths to those of birdsfoot trefoil - Widderchens similar and also have a role, albeit powerful, light green base color and a fine white hairs. The animals have black dot rows on either side of the back and each on the side of the body and yellow dot rows between. The yellow elapse in part with the green color. The black series, especially those at the back with the larger spots, which in their form a series of " X".

They are found in wet meadows, floodplains, marshes and swelling in humid forest clearings, but they are now rare due to the decline of wetlands. In Austria, the style after it was lost for many years, found in the late 1990s in Vorarlberg again.

Way of life

Flight times and caterpillars

The moths fly in one generation from mid-June to mid-August. The caterpillars are found from August to June, and after hibernation.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed mainly on the leaves of marsh trefoil ( Lotus uliginosus ), but also of the ordinary foot trefoil ( Lotus corniculatus ).

Development

The eggs are yellow, round and elongated. They are found in groups on the underside of leaves of fodder plants. The caterpillars overwinter. It is possible that they require by Diapausen up to five years to develop. Pupation takes place in an elongated, pale yellow cocoon high up on blades of grass. The doll in it is black.
