- June 25: Adolphus Warburton Moore, Horace Walker, Edward Whymper, Christian Almer and Michel Croz succeed the first ascent of the Barre des Ecrins, the highest peak of the French Dauphiné Alps.
- July 9: Edward Whymper and Michel Croz climb in conjunction with other first Mont Dolent.
- July 15: One rope team led by Edward Whymper succeed Aiguille d' Argentière the first ascent of the Mont Blanc Range.
- JULY 21: Melchior Anderegg climbs with Frank Walker, Lucy Walker, Horace Walker and Jakob Anderegg as the first 3699 meters high Balmhorn in the Bernese Alps.
- August 22: Melchior Anderegg, Florence Crauford Grove and Leslie Stephen was the first to climb the 4221 meter high Zinalrothorn in the Valais Alps.
- Joseph Anton Franz Specht and Poell climb as first the High riffler in Verwallgruppe in Tyrol.

- Max Lange wins as in the two previous years, the Congress of the West German Chess Federation, the first major German chess tournament.
- The New Berlin Schachzeitung appears as a rival to 1860 moved to Leipzig Schachzeitung by Max Long after Gustav Richard Neumann has the Berlin publisher Julius Springer convinced that the Prussian capital should not remain without chess magazine. Editors are initially Neumann and Adolf Anderssen.
