- 2 Oktober/20. November: The Roman P'tit - Bonhomme ( The Foundling ) by Jules Verne published in two volumes.
- The first three volumes of Karl May Winnetou appear.
Drama
- The play Anatol by Arthur Schnitzler will be premiered. The work to which Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote an introduction under a pseudonym, Schnitzler brings the title " psychological depth research " by Sigmund Freud.

- Jerome K. Jerome founded the moderately successful magazine To-Day.

- 8 September: Pope Leo XIII. expressed in the encyclical Laetitiae sanctae on the Rosary and the right ordering of human social community.
