1932 Summer Olympics

The Summer Olympic Games 1932 ( officially Games of the X Olympiad ) were held until August 12, 1932 in Los Angeles, USA, to the specially built Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on July 30. Los Angeles had applied already for 1924 and 1928 and now in spite of great concern awarded the contract because there were no other candidates. The IOC had been criticized not have good memories of the first non-European Games in St. Louis in 1904. Well as the high cost of travel in a generally economically difficult time.

Highlights

  • Although because of a global economic crisis only about half as much athletes as four years earlier participated in Amsterdam, as many teams that travel could not pay, there were many great successes and 18 old world records were set or outbid.
  • For the first time since 1896, the games were limited to two weeks. In the intervening games still had each located several months between the opening and closing ceremonies.
  • At the Olympic hockey tournament, a total of only three teams participate. How could the United States win the bronze medal, although they lost all games ( 1:24 to 2:9 against India and Japan).

Outstanding athletes

  • The 21- year-old American Mildred "Babe" Didrikson qualified for a total of five contests, but was allowed to participate in only three of which they won all: gold in the javelin, high jump and 80 - meter hurdles, in the last two disciplines even with world record. In the final of the high jump the outstanding U.S. athlete, however, jumped 1,657 meters as high as her teammate Jean Shiley. The jury Didrikson due to the jump style decided to allocate only the second place ( head first ). The two women left their medals merge later.
  • The 14- year-old Japanese Kusuo Kitamura won the competition more than 1500 meters freestyle and is the youngest male athlete ever to win a gold medal in a sport.

Participant

A total of 37 nations participated in the Summer Olympics in 1932, nine fewer than 1928. For China and Colombia it was the first participation in the Olympic Games.

Others

  • For the first time the award ceremony took place simultaneously after the competitions. In addition, the three-level podium was introduced at the Summer Games (the " podium " is an invention of Lake Placid, which had held the Winter Games in the same year ).
  • For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games an Olympic village, consisting of 550 houses was built, for the male athletes - the women were housed in luxury hotels.
  • Paavo Nurmi was disabled for life because of an expense report, which cost him his amateur status.
  • In the years 1912-1948 also medals for artistic achievements were awarded to 18 areas in seven Olympic Games.   • For the wrestler Olympic champion Jacob Brendel his 1000 marks travel money were collected at home privately in Nuremberg.
  • The games brought sensational innovations: triggered electrical timekeeping with starter pistols, stopwatch and photo finish; Flags and anthems, as well as the presence of the boxing referee between the ropes and not in the conventional way outside the ring.
  • Stanisław Walasiewicz, who won the 100 -meter run of the women who was intersex in reality. However, this was only in 1980 noted in their autopsy.

Competitions

For the first and only time football has been removed from the program. Shooting was represented with two competitions again. Furthermore, there were the following changes compared to Amsterdam 1928:
