1968 Argentine Primera División

The Primera División in 1968 was the 38th season of the Argentine Football League Primera División. This was divided into two semi-annual championships, each brought forth an Argentinian master. In the first half of the Torneo Metropolitano took place, the second half was played in the Torneo Nacional. This mode is maintained until the year 1985, before the play in Europe one adapted itself and no longer played in the calendar year, but from summer to summer.

Torneo Metropolitano

The Torneo Metropolitano was the first semi-annual championship. It began on March 1 and ended on 4 August 1968. Initially, two groups were formed, the two best-placed teams met in two semi-final matches. From these semi-finals, the two finalists were determined. These were CA San Lorenzo de Almagro and Estudiantes de La Plata in 1968. San Lorenzo was able to prevail in the final game in the end and was the fourth time in the club's Argentine master.

Torneo Nacional

The Torneo Nacional was played with sixteen participants who played once each against each other in league system. It started on September 6 and ended on 29 December 1968. Qualified for the National tournament, the top six teams in the groups of the Torneo Metropolitano and the four best representatives of the previously second division were.

At the end of the Torneo Nacional to Velez Sarsfield demonstrated that it was the first time in the club's history of Argentine football champion.

Championship playoff

Since the three table first Velez Sarsfield River Plate and Racing Club Avellaneda were tied, had to choose one consisting of these three teams round decision over the National Champion in 1968. In the end, Velez Sarsfield secured because of more goals scored against River Plate the championship after both teams could have three points and a goal difference of 2.
