Training

During the Friday practice of the new and not yet fully cured asphalt broke on several occasions. On the night of Saturday appropriate repair work had to be carried out. The GPDA threatened to boycott the Grand Prix if the problems were not completely eliminated. During the training sessions on Saturday eventually turned out that the track was easy to navigate.

Ronnie Peterson qualified for the third time this season in the Lotus 72 for the pole position. He shared the front row with Denis Hulme McLaren M23. Fittipaldi and Stewart got one on the top. On lap 18, Fittipaldi overtook first his teammate Peterson. When Cevert turned shortly afterwards, the Brazilian was able to take the lead. Five laps later, however, he was replaced by Stewart of this position.

In the closing stages of the race, Fittipaldi had increasingly struggling with fuel pressure problems. He had to then pass Cevert, which thus ensured a Tyrrell - two victory.
