GDR

The GDR had in the preliminary round Group 4, the Netherlands and Poland to the opponent. In home games, there were two full success - in Rostock 2-0 against the Netherlands and in Hall 4-1 against Poland - and in the Away Games two draws (both 1:1). Thus, the GDR was able to secure win the group with one point ahead of Poland.

Because the home game, however, was won in Jena 3-0, the GDR could qualify for the semifinals. There England was the enemy. Having already was a surprise win in the first game 2-1 in Sheffield, the GDR was the success no longer take and qualified in Jena with a 1-0 home win for the final.

In the final, was the USSR, which had itself clearly against Yugoslavia, the opponents. After the East Germans in the home game in front of 15,000 spectators in Rostock on 0-0 never got, they had to go to the 0:1 defeat in Moscow, as in 1978, to make do with the vice - European champion.

Switzerland

Switzerland had in the preliminary round Group 8 next to the Luxembourg strong Italians to the opponent. The duels were therefore crucial for the group. After the Confederates in the home game in Lugano came only to a 0-0 draw and had to admit defeat in the return match in Brescia 0-1, it was only enough for second place group.
