In the season 1987/88 Bundesliga 2 Stuttgarter Kickers and FC St. Pauli achieved promotion to the Bundesliga. The SV Darmstadt 98 failed in the relegation games.

The DFB withdrew on June 27, 1988 Red-White Oberhausen the license. The DFB Arbitration Court confirmed this decision on 11 July 1988. SpVgg Bayreuth therefore remained as Seventeenth in the league. Besides Oberhausen newbie Remscheid and Ulm and ex- Bundesliga club Bielefeld had to dismount in the league.

Top Scorer of the season was Souleymane Sane from SC Freiburg with 21 goals.

In the relegation matches the Sixteenth Bundesliga SV Waldhof Mannheim and the third in the 2nd Bundesliga SV Darmstadt 98 clashed.
