1993 J. League

The J. League in 1993 was the first season of the Japanese J. League. It was attended by ten clubs. The regular season was played in two half- series and started on 15 May 1993. Upon completion of the second half of the season on 15 December 1993 played the winners of the two half- series, Kashima Antlers and Verdy Kawasaki, in two games to the Japanese title. Here Verdy handed after a 2-0 win in the first leg 1-1 in the second leg to win the championship.

Mode

The season was played in two halves. In each half, the teams played against each other twice, once at home and once away. There was no draw; case of a tie after 90 minutes, the match was extended to twice fifteen minutes, with the golden goal rule was applied. Stand it then still tied, the winner of the game was determined by a penalty shootout.

After the end of a half series, the club qualified with the most wins for the playoffs to the Japanese championship. The winner of the playoffs qualified as a Japanese master of the Asian Club Championship 1994/95.

Participating clubs

A total of ten teams were selected to participate in the first J. League season. Nine of them were this company teams who played in the Japan Soccer League and were renamed after the inclusion in the new professional league. Only Shimizu S-Pulse was created specifically with a view to inclusion in the J. League.

First half of the season

The first half of the season was held between May 15 and July 14th. Title sponsor of the series was half the beverage company Suntory.

Suntory Championship
