1996–97 Eliteserien season

The 1996/97 season was the 58th season of the Elite series, the highest Norwegian ice hockey league. Champion for the third time in club history Storhamar Ishockey. Hasle- Løren Idrettslag got down to the second division.

Mode

In the main round each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The top eight teams qualified for the playoffs, where the Master was played. The penultimate round of the main had to face the runner-up of the second division, while the last placed the main round descent directly to the second division in the relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
