1996–97 Nationale 1A season
The 1996/97 season was the 75th season of the National 1A, the highest French Hockey League. Masters were to total the second time in club history the Albatros de Brest. The Club des Sports de Megève, Gap Hockey Club and Club d' Epinal Image descended to the second division.

Mode
The twelve teams completed in the main round for 22 games. The top six teams qualified for the final round, while the remaining six teams contested a qualifying round. All six teams in the final round and the top two finishers in the qualifying round qualified for the playoffs, where the Master was played. The remaining four teams in the qualifying round contest together a relegation round, the prize went to the league secured, while the other three teams descended to the second division. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
