Two films dominated: Martin Scorsese's After Hours (After Hours) was the best film and won the Best Director Award and three nominations, Ethan and Joel Coen's debut film Blood Simple won the Best Director Award along with Scorsese and the award for best lead actor and also three other nominations. Geraldine Pages choice for best Actress for A Trip to Bountiful - Journey Into Bliss ( The Trip to Bountiful ) was confirmed at the Oscars. Best foreign language film was not Akira Kurosawa's Ran late work, but the Brazilian- American co - production The Kiss of the Spider Woman ( Kiss of the Spider Woman).
