2000 FIFA Futsal World Championship

The fourth FIFA Futsal World Championship was held from 18 November to 3 December 2000 in Guatemala's capital, Guatemala City instead. The 16 participating teams played 40 games in the fourth Futsal World Champion under the auspices of FIFA.

The Spanish team could win the World Cup for the first time by a 4-3 win in the final over defending champion Brazil. The Portuguese team won the 3rd place match 4-2 against Russia. The Brazilian Manoel was like four years earlier awarded both top scorer and the best player of the tournament.

Hosts and venues

Guatemala to Mexico was the second Central American country that hosted the final round of an official FIFA competition. The tournament was held in two halls in the capital, Guatemala City.

  • The Domo Polideportivo was built for the Futsal World Cup within eleven months. The multi-purpose arena was the main venue of the tournament. A total of 28 games were played at the Domo, including all games of the interim and final round and twelve matches of the preliminary round. The hall took 7,500 spectators and also provided for 100 media space. The hall is located in the 13th borough.
  • In Gimansio Teodoro Flores Palacio twelve preliminary round games were held. The hall was for the tournament completely renovated and modernized. Thus, the changing area were completely rebuilt, the ventilation and water system rehabilitated, expanded the bleachers to the press and VIP seats and installed a new floor. Up to 5,000 spectators could watch the games in the located in the 5th district of Halle.

Participant

To the 15 finals places who applied a total of 63 associations and thus 16 more than four years earlier. Guatemala as hosts qualified automatically.

In Europe, there were five qualifying groups, each with five or six teams in which each of the qualified group winners. Here, put some surprisingly Portugal against the favored Italy and Croatia against the Czech Republic through. In addition, vice world champion Spain, the Netherlands and Russia qualified.

In South America, the qualifiers were determined as part of the Futsal World Grand Prix 2000. Nine of the ten CONMEBOL members took part in the competition (only lacked Colombia ), could qualify South America and defending champions Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, the 3rd place prevailed in the match against Bolivia.

To the two other places in the CONCACAF be competed eight nations that were played in the CONCACAF Futsal Championship 2000. In addition to tournament winner Costa Rica Cuba also for the final tournament qualified. The United States missed the tournament for the first time the third finals appearance.

Again for Africa was only one place. Four teams ( and thus less than in 1996) played in Cairo the title of African champions and specific at the same time the Africa representative for the World Cup finals. In Asia, the participants were played during the Asia Futsal Championship 2000. In addition to Iran, Kazakhstan and tournament hosts Thailand qualified. The Japanese team failed to qualify just as fourth-placed.

In Oceania there was the end of August 2000, a qualifying tournament in Vanuatu, which was the same as Ozeanienmeisterschaft. Australia dominated here as early as 1996 the tournament and sat confidently without loss of points and 41:4 gates through.

For owners Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Croatia, Portugal and Thailand it was the first appearance at a FIFA Futsal World Cup finals.

Mode

The mode was unchanged compared to the previous World Championships. The 16 teams played in the first four preliminary round groups of four teams. Within each group, each team played against each other team. The two best group of each group qualified for the second group stage, in which the eight teams into two groups of four (two each preliminary round winner and two first round second per group) were distributed again and again fought out against any team a game. The top two in each group qualified for the semi-finals, which took place in the knockout system. Case of a tie during the group phase, the goal difference over the placement decision.

Awards

Both the Golden Ball for the best player of the tournament as well as the Golden Boot for the top scorer went like four years earlier to the Brazilians Manoel Tobias. Tobias was with 19 goals and 14 assists again the superior scorer and was also awarded the Golden Boot. His teammates Vander ( 11 goals / 8 assists) and Schumacher ( 10 goals / 4 assists) got the Silver and Bronze Shoe. Schumacher was also awarded the Silver Ball. The Bronze ball went to the Spaniard Daniel. The Fair Play Award was the team from Brazil.
