9th Berlin International Film Festival
The Berlin International Film Festival 1959 took place between July 7, 1959 June 26.
The Berlinale was in 1959 politically against the backdrop of Berlin crisis, Nikita Khrushchev had started when he had 1958 the four -power status of Berlin to withdraw unilaterally. During the Berlinale, the festival had to step twice into the background, as the Hessian Derby to the German soccer championship between Eintracht Frankfurt and Kickers Offenbach took place at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on June 28. On July 1, then chose the Federal Assembly in the Berlin CDU politician Heinrich Lübke the second President of Germany.

International Jury
Jury President this year was the American director Robert Aldrich. He got the following jury: John Bryan (Great Britain ), Charles Ford (France), OE Hasse ( Germany ), Johan Jacobsen ( Denmark), Shigueo Miyata (Japan ), Gerhard Prager ( Germany ), Waley Eddin Sameh (United Arab Emirates), Walther Schmieding ( Germany ) and Ignazio Silone (Italy).

- Golden Bear: Scream if you can Akira Kurosawa ( best director)
- Shirley MacLaine in Always the darn Women ( Best Actress )
- Jean Gabin in The jail is no room available ( Best Actor )
- Hayley Mills in Tiger Bay ( Special Award for her dramatic performance )
- Golden Bear for Best Documentary: White Wilderness by James Algar
