The A2 is considered the most important north -south connection of the Netherlands, especially the piece from Amsterdam to Eindhoven has an immensely high volume of traffic.

Course

A2 has a length of 217 km. In Maastricht, the A2 is a few kilometers long a main road and then called N2. The N2 continues through Maastricht and caused many traffic jams and high air pollution. A tunnel under the city to remedy the situation.

Between Amsterdam and Utrecht follows the route of the A2 E 35, then the range of E 25

In parts run more highways together with the A2 via a route:

  • Between nodes Empel and Hintham the A59
  • Between the nodes and De Hogt Leenderheide A67

History

The section between Amsterdam and Utrecht was opened in 1954 and is often mistakenly referred to as the first Dutch motorway. The first Dutch section of highway opened in 1936 as part of the present A12 between Voorburg and Zoetermeer. Even before the outbreak of World War II, large parts of today's A4, A12 and A44 were completed. The section opened in 1954, however, was the first after the Second World War opened section of highway with separate carriageways.

On 10 January 2005 the Department of Transport began with a sample of " dynamic overtaking " ( no overtaking for trucks at rush hour ) on the A2 between Abcoude and Maarssen.

Dropped planning

In the 1960s, an alternative route of the motorway between 's- Hertogenbosch and Weert was planned that at Eindhoven east past should pass through the Strabrechtse heath through. This plan was not pursued further in 1971. The expansion of the existing western bypass of Eindhoven is however still considered as provisional.

Future developments

For years, the A2 is considered bottleneck and storage source. The Corridor Study Amsterdam - Utrecht ( CAU) led the mid-1990s to the Cabinet decision to extend the highway. The special feature of this study was that the increase in capacity of the motorway was also considered in conjunction with the transport capacity of the other roads, in this case, rail and waterways. The expansion work on the motorway to be completed on schedule in 2012.

On January 5, 2007, announced that between Breukelen and Maarssen in the direction of Utrecht and the junction Everdingen south of Utrecht traffic is monitored by cameras to particularly heavy users of the A2 questionnaires sent. In this they were asked to comment on whether they would be prepared during construction activities (eg public transport ) to use alternative transportation. The cameras were installed mid-March 2007 dismantled.

In Utrecht

After expanding the highway is in the area of Utrecht have five carriageways, of which three are continuous and two more as a parallel roadways are built to separate local traffic from long-distance transport can. Over a length of 1650 meters, the highway is out in the tunnel in order to build a new district ( Leidsche Rijn ) with probably about 80,000 inhabitants can. During the construction of this district temporary connection points are built to largely keep the site traffic from the city streets. The A2 is then developed between the junction Maarssen and the node Holendrecht four -lane carriageways and in due course to the junction Abcoude on five -lane carriageways.

On 10 May 2006 Transport Minister Karla Peijs announced the expansion zehnstreifigen between the node and the cross Holendrecht Oudenrijn. The first lanes were opened to traffic on 16 July 2010 and the second section between Vinkeveen Utrecht and was opened on 21 July 2010.

Since the development of transport in the middle of the Netherlands is progressing the development of infrastructure, 2006, a new study for further action was commissioned.

Everdingen - 's- Hertogenbosch

In February 2006, construction began to extend the A2 on three -lane carriageways between junction Everdingen and Culemborg. In Rosmalen and 's- Hertogenbosch, the highway will be expanded to four -lane carriageways, wherein each direction, two lanes intended for local and two lanes for long distance service. The municipality of 's- Hertogenbosch is planning a new residential and commercial district on the highway to settle in the course of the A2 - expansion. As part of these plans, the A2 is done north of the junction Hintham over a length of 300 meters through a tunnel.

'S- Hertogenbosch - Eindhoven

The State and the province of North Brabant currently being discussed on the solution of the problem, to equalize the course of the A2 between 's- Hertogenbosch and Eindhoven. Rijkswaterstaat, the agency responsible for the construction of motorways and entertaining authority favors a complete new building in order to make the complicated routing in the Eindhoven area fundamentally new can. The following concepts are discussed:

  • Six or achtstreifiger expansion
  • Emergency lane usage at peak times
  • Joint development with the N279 between 's- Hertogenbosch and Veghel.

A system for dynamic hard shoulder is first realized by 2008.

In Eindhoven

As part of a basic repair of the (incomplete) ring road here the highway was expanded to four times two carriageways. Again, there is a separation between local and long-distance transport. Long-distance transport is subject to a maximum speed of 120 km / h, and the local traffic on parallel roads a top speed of 80 km / h The A73 was completed in 2008 also leads to the relief of the A2 and the Greater Eindhoven.

In Maastricht

In January 2006, the parties have signed the financing plan for the eight-lane tunnel under (incl. distributor lanes ) by the Maastricht A2. The agreement provided for a construction period from 2007 to 2012. Tunnel construction began in 2012 and is to 2016Vorlage: Future / planned in 2 years.
