Administrative geography of the United Kingdom
The territorial division of the United Kingdom has been repeatedly changed dramatically since the late 19th century, which led in part to completely new administrative districts and later again to resolutions of such districts. Nevertheless, the names are to this day still partly the old counties in everyday use used, although the site no longer belongs to this county. The following table describes the status of 2013.
England

England is divided into regions, which, however, except for Greater London have no administrative functions. Greater London is divided into the City of London and 32 boroughs. The other regions are divided into 27 non-metropolitan counties, six metropolitan counties and 56 unitary authorities (one-tier administrative districts ). The 27 non-metropolitan counties are in 201 districts, and the six Metropolitan counties are divided into 36 metropolitan boroughs.
Wales

Wales is divided into 22 unitary authorities, but because of their history or their size, have different names, so there are three cities ( Cities ), 10 County Boroughs and 9 counties. Wales has since 1998 a parliament with limited powers, the Welsh National Assembly ( National Assembly for Wales).
Scotland

Scotland today consists of 32 unitary authorities, including three island districts; there are no administrative level above or below them. Decentralization is in Scotland 's most advanced with a Scottish Parliament and a Scottish executive.
Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland, there are 26 districts with the status of a unitary authority. There are no upper or lower administrative units. The Northern Ireland Assembly is the Parliament of Northern Ireland, which, however, like all provincial parliaments, has only limited powers.
