Al-`Ula

Al-' Ula (Arabic العلا, DMG al - ʿ Ula ) is an oasis about 150 km south-west of Tayma and 400 km north- west of Medina in the north-west Saudi Arabia, located on the Incense Route.

Al-' Ula corresponds to the biblical Dadan and was the capital of the empire lihyanischen. There are numerous inscriptions from the 6th to the 4th century BC in the local language, which is one of the early North Arabian languages. Because of the importance of the incense trade the oasis was located at least since the 2nd century BC to the early 1st century BC under the reign of the South Arabian kingdom of Ma'in.
