Albert von Le Coq

August Albert Le Coq (also: Albrecht von Le Coq, born September 8, 1860 in Berlin, † April 21, 1930 ) was a German archaeologist and Central Asia researcher.

Albert von Le Coq, son of businessman August von Le Coq (1827-1894), had a fortune in the form of breweries and wineries in Central and Eastern Europe inherited (see A. Le Coq ) that gave him his travels and his studies at the Museum allowed for Ethnology in Berlin. He was assistant to the director of the Indian section of the Museum, Albert Grünwedel, and organized with this expeditions to Central Asia, in particular to places along the Silk Road. As Grünwedel ill before departure of the second Turfanexpedition, Le Coq fell to the line.

The expedition came across a distributed network of Buddhist cave temples and manichäistischer in Xinjiang ( northwest China ). Many of the manuscripts in the caves were destroyed during the excavations. Some paintings in the caves were Le Coq speculate it could be an Aryan ( Indo-European ) culture, which was related with the Franks.

Chiseled With the help of his assistant Theodor Bartus and sawed Le Coq about 360 kg frescoes, statues and other works of art from and take them to 305 boxes to Berlin. Le Coq justified these " loans " with the turmoil in Turkestan at the time of the expeditions. Some of the art was exhibited until 1944 in what was then the Museum of Ethnology at the Prinz- Albrecht-Strasse, when it was severely damaged by a bomb. Many of the objects had been previously outsourced, however, could largely be attributed after the war and are now in the Museum of Asian Art, the National Museums in Berlin.

Le Coq grave is located in Berlin's Dahlem cemetery.
