Algirdas Å emeta

Algirdas Gediminas Šemeta ( born April 23, 1962 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian politician and economist. Since 2010 he has served as European Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Union, Audit and Anti-Fraud in the Barroso Commission II

Study, research

Algirdas Šemeta studied from 1980 to June 1985 at the Faculty of Economic Cybernetics and Finance of the University of Vilnius. There he received the diploma of economist and mathematician. From 1985 to 1990 he worked as a researcher and economist at the Lithuanian Institute of Economics ( Lietuvos ekonomikos institutas ).

Career

From 1990 to 1991 Šemeta headed the sub-department of the Department of Economic Development at the Ministry of Economy. From 1991 to 1992 he was a consultant and deputy director of the department of the government office. From December 1992 to 1996 Šemeta headed the Securities Commission at the Ministry of Finance of Lithuania ( Vertybinių popierių komisija prie Finansų ministerijos ).

From June 1996 to February 1997 he was chairman of the Lithuanian Securities Commission ( Vertybinių popierių komisija ), from February 1997 to June 1999 Finance Minister of Lithuania. Then he was in June and November 1999, Vice President of the company AB " Nalšia ". From December 1999 to September 2001 he was Secretary of the Interior in the Cabinet Office, from September 2001 to December 2008, he headed the Statistical Office ( Statistikos departamentas prie Lietuvos Respublikos Vyriausybės ) of 9 December 2008 to July 2009 he was Minister of Finance of Lithuania. From July 2009 to February 2010 he was the EU Commissioner for Financial Programming and Budget. As a result, Commission, he assumed responsibility for Taxation and Customs Union, Audit and Anti-Fraud.
