Alistair Darling

Alistair Maclean Darling ( born November 28, 1953 in London ) is a British Labour Party politician, and was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2007 to 2010 in the government of Gordon Brown.

Although born in London, is the son of a civil engineer of Scottish descent. He went to Kirkcaldy and in Musselburgh to school and studied law at the University of Aberdeen ( LL.B ). He then worked as a lawyer.

Since 1987 he is a member of the British House of Commons for the constituency of Edinburgh South West (formerly Edinburgh Central). Darling had since 1997 held various cabinet posts ( including as Minister for Trade and Industry) and has since been a member of the Privy Council.
