Anastasios Peponis

Anastasios Peponis (Greek Αναστάσιος Πεπονής, born January 1, 1924 in Athens, † August 8, 2011 ) was a Greek politician of the PASOK.

Life

Peponis committed during the occupation of Greece in World War II in the resistance movement of the Panhellenic Union of Fighting Youth ( Πανελλήνιος Ένωσις Αγωνιζόμενων Νέων, PEAN ). After the war he studied law and was 1951-1952 Chairman of the National Progressive Center Union ( Εθνική Πολιτική Ένωσις Κέντρου, EPEK ).

He then worked as a journalist in radio and was known nationwide 1964-1965, when he introduced as general manager of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation the first tentative television station in Greece. During the time of the Greek military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974 he was active in the resistance against the regime of Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos and therefore was arrested five times. Later, he lived temporarily in exile.

After the end of Obrist regime, he became involved in the PASOK Andreas Papandreou founded and was first elected in 1977 as a member of this Parliament, where he served until 2000. Between 1981 and 1984 he was also a member of the 1st European Parliament.

After the election victory of PASOK against the New Democracy it was in October 1981, first Minister of Industry and Energy and held that office in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou to 5 July 1982. Between 17 January 1984 and 1985, he was then Minister without Portfolio in the Cabinet.

In the second cabinet Papandreou he was between October 1986 and July 1989 Minister of Industry, Minister of Research and Technology and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. In addition, he was from 17 March to July 2, 1989 to the Prime Minister.

The Office of the Minister at the Prime Minister, he took over again from 13 October 1993 until December 28, 1994 in the third cabinet Papandreou. In this office he was instrumental in the legislation and the design of public service. After he was Minister of Justice on 10 February 1995, he was between September 15, 1995 and January 22, 1996 Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology.

Most recently he was from 22 January to September 1996 Minister for Health and Social Solidarity in the first cabinet of Konstantinos Simitis. Peponis died following a prolonged heart disease.
