Yiannos Papantoniou

Giannos Papantoniou (Greek Γιάννος Παπαντωνίου; born July 27, 1949 in Paris) is a Greek politician and served from 1996 to 2004 Minister in various ministries.

Giannos Papantoniou studied economics at the Universities of Athens and Wisconsin ( USA) and Historical Sciences in Paris. The PhD in economics he wrote at the University of Cambridge on The post-war industrialization of Greece.

From 1977 to 1978 Papantoniou taught in economics at the University of Athens and led a research contract from the Centre of Planning and Economic Research, Athens.

From 1978 to 1981 he was a member of the Economics Department of the OECD in Paris. In addition to this work he has done in this period, contributions to the development of the economic program of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK ).

In 1981 he became a deputy of PASOK in the European Parliament. After completion of this mandate, he was appointed as Advisor to the Prime Minister on issues of European Community. At the same time, he held the function of the representative of Greece in the ad-hoc committee to assess the institutional problems of the European Committees, installed by the Euro Europe.

1985 Papantoniou was appointed Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs and in March 1986 the Minister for Trade. In June 1989 he became a deputy in the Greek Parliament for the 1st district of Athens. The re-election in October 1993. Since 1996, he was Minister for the National Economy and Finance, 2001-2004 Minister of Defense of Greece.

Counter Papantoniou is determined on suspicion of tax evasion. He is said to have concealed a million fortune to his wife in the 2008 tax return .. He indicates that he knew nothing of the account of his wife. For a deposit of 50,000 euros he was set free.
