Antonio Filocamo

Antonio Filocamo (* 1669 in Messina, † 1743 ibid of the plague ) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque in Sicily.

Life

Antonio was a member of a family of artists in Messina. Like his brothers Paolo and Gaetano, he studied in Rome with Carlo Maratta. Back in the Messina brothers Filocamo founded a well-attended art school with a focus on " fresco " to which Antonio had specialized.

In the following years the brothers have provided numerous frescoes and panel paintings in churches and private clients, including King John V of Portugal ( 1706-1750 ).

The main work of the brothers, the ceiling paintings are in the S. Gregorio at Messina, which were like most of her work destroyed by the great earthquake of Messina in 1908. In addition, Antonio Filocamo worked in the Cathedral of Acireale and close to Santa Caterina in Palermo. By Andrea Filocamo comes the " Madonna of the Letter " of 1690, which is painted in the Byzantine style and is located in the Cathedral of Palermo.

All three brothers died during a plague epidemic in 1743.

Pietro Paolo Vasta and Placido Campolo were students of the brothers Filocamo.
