Archduke Leopold Ludwig of Austria

Leopold Ludwig Maria Franz Julius Eustorgius Gerhard of Austria (* June 6, 1823 in Milan, † May 24 1898 in Hernstein ) from the House of Habsburg -Lorraine was an Archduke of Austria and was an imperial general and inspector general and major reformer of the Engineer Corps.

Life

Leopold was the eldest son of Archduke Rainer (1783-1853), Viceroy of Lombardy from his marriage to Maria Elisabeth (1800-1856), daughter of Prince Charles Emmanuel of Savoy - Carignan.

In k.u.k. Military service in 1850 he reached the rank of Feldmarschalleutnants and 1867 a general of cavalry. He was the owner of the Infantry Regiment No. 53 and head of the Russian Ukrainian Uhlans Regiment No. 13 and the Prussian 6th Infantry Regiment, and since 1868 the Inspector General of the Imperial Engineer Corps. During the revolution in Italy Leopold was instrumental in the capture of Fort Malghera. In the research on military technology Leopold did with inventions in the mines, naval mines and torpedo being out and reformed and modernized the corps of engineers significantly. Under his leadership, the studs of the Vienna waterworks were developed by Genius troops.

From 1865 to 1868 was 25.Feber Leopold inspector of naval forces and the fleet. Less successful Leopold was as commander of the 8th Army Corps. After a stroke in 1868 Leopold withdrew into private life. He had the castle Hernstein to 1880 by Theophil von Hansen remodel historicist and devoted himself to hunting. More strokes tied the Archduke in the last years of life to a wheelchair. He died unmarried and childless and was buried in the tomb of Ferdinand Vienna Imperial Crypt.

Leopold was a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Order of St. Stephen's, the Imperial Russian St. Andrew and St. Alexander Nevsky Order, the Polish Order of the White Eagle and the Order of St. Anne first class, Sardinian Annunziaten Medal, the Bavarian Order of St. Hubert, the Prussian black and red eagle order first class Hanoverian Guelphs Order, the Hessian House Order of the Golden lion, the Grand Ducal Hessian Ludwig Order, of St. Louis and of Constantine St. George's Order of Parma.
