History

When in 1879 James J. Hill founded the later Great Northern Railway, a railway line from Crookston to the Canadian border was planned. The land on which is the present city was previously inhabited by a product coming from Canada settler named Gervais who established a small settlement here. Hill was south of Middle River to create a railway settlement, which was named Argyle and in 1883 incorporated as an independent municipality.

Since the new settlement was located only on the south side of the river, the embankment was smooth. But this also meant that the northern shore was a large polder area. Thus, the earlier settlement by Gervais in 1888 was abandoned with the construction of the dike, which was achieved by compensating the government.

One of the first predominantly French-Canadian settlers gradually numerous immigrants from England, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Scotland and Germany were added.
