Asher Robbins

Asher Robbins ( born October 26, 1757 Wethersfield, Connecticut, † February 25, 1845 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. Senate.

Asher Robbins made ​​in 1782 graduated from Yale College and was subsequently tutor at Rhode Iceland College in Providence, today Brown University, where he remained until 1790. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1792 and commenced practice in Providence. In 1795 he moved to Newport, 1812, he was appointed United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Iceland. From 1818 to 1825 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland.

Following the resignation of U.S. Senator James De Wolf on October 31, 1825 Asher Robbins was elected to succeed him in Congress. As a member of Nationalrepublikaner he moved into the Parliament; during his lasting until March 3, 1839 term, he later switched over to the Whigs. During this period he was also Chairman of the Committee Committee on engrossed bills.

After he resigned from the Senate, Robbins was 1840-1841 again deputy in the House of Representatives of his State. From 1841 until his death he held the office of Postmaster of Newport.
