Elisha Mathewson

Elisha Mathewson ( born April 18, 1767 in Scituate, Providence County, Rhode Iceland, † October 14, 1853 ibid ) was an American politician ( Democratic- Republican), who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. Senate.

After he had completed his academic training, Elisha Mathewson served first as a justice of the peace in his home town of Scituate. In addition, he worked in agriculture. When James Fenner resigned from his position as a U.S. Senator to become governor of Rhode Iceland, Mathewson was elected his successor. He took advantage of his position in Washington between October 26, 1807 and March 3, 1811.

Then he was again mainly active as a farmer. 1821 took over Mathewson as a deputy in the House of Representatives of Rhode Iceland once again a political mandate and was there also Speaker of the Parliament chamber. In 1822 he was still in the state Senate. At the time of his death in October 1853, he was the oldest living former U.S. Senator.
