Pallenis maritima

The coastal beach star ( Pallenis maritima ), also called ducats flower, is a plant of the genus Pallenis in the sunflower family ( Asteraceae).

Description

The coastal beach star has reached 5 to 40 centimeters a perennial plant or a dwarf shrub, the plant height (2). The plant is bushy, but no branches are present directly under the heads. The leaves are oblong - verkehrteiförmig, einnervig, plump and bucklich bristly rough. The flower heads have a diameter of 3 to 3.5 inches. The coastal beach star was first described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus as Buphthalmum maritimum. 1832 Christian Friedrich Lessing set it up as Asteriscus maritimus. As part of the nomenclatural revision of the genus by Werner Greuter 1997, she was then transferred together with other species in the genus Pallenis. Subsequent molecular analyzes confirmed this classification. As the closest related applies Pallenis hierichuntica.

Use

The coastal beach star is scattered used as an ornamental plant in window boxes, hanging baskets and summer discounts. The species is probably since 1900 in culture. The variety ' Gold Coin ' has sterile flowers.
